PTO Minutes August 28, 2007
Attendance: Mary McCabe, Teri Dixon, Janet Hanley, Tymie Morrow, Charmaine Cusick, Tee Moran, Hortensia Castro, Mary White, Joan Kurtenbach, John C. Allen (BOE liaison),Dorothy Houlihan, Burcy Hines, Wynetta Johnson, Don Vogel, Kimberly Werner, Cheryl Williams, Barb Nelson, Attila Weninger.
- 1. Introductions
- 2. The May meeting summary was approved.
- 3. Barb Nelson provided an update on the calendar and directory project
- 4. School Report (Dr. Weninger & Don Vogel)
- a. Division heads will provide information for PTO newsletters
- b. 1st town hall meeting will be tomorrow and all are welcome to attend
- c. First day fire alarm was due to overheating new oven -students responded well and everyone got out safely
- d. Scoville Ave construction is due to be complete next Wednesday
- e. Second day tornado alarm - building was locked down and staff and kids did well again
- f. Back to school next Thursday - parents are encouraged to attend.
- g. Next Thursday there will be class assemblies - boys separate from girls and women talking to girls and men talking to boys - lack of respect issues that were identified in the survey last year will be addressed.
- h. Registration - they recognize that they need to make this work better - will report back to PTO later this year to talk about some ideas.
- i. Mall Project - the mall is all new. There are more bike racks, students are able to exit from café to mall for lunch and there are tables and benches outside. Traffic will be restricted to garbage trucks and food deliveries before school hours.
- j. OPRF had one of the 20 students who scored a perfect 36 on ACT
- k. The new school organizational chart was presented. Other information will be coming soon include an "appeals" chart that will enable parents to know whom to contract on specific issues.
- l. Deans of Discipline are now Deans
- m. Dean Counselor are now Counselors
- n. The goals is to get deans and counselors to work together, look more developmentally at kids, social and emotional issues from a variety of people - They expect they will see results of this major step at the end of this year
- o. Web will soon have a list of responsibilities for each administrative position
- q. The principals and 2 assistant principals are interim. The search for permanent positions will begin in November.
- r. Board Liaison (John Allen)
- a. code of conduct
- b. cell phone - students may have them but must keep them turned off
- c. progressive discipline
- d. truancy - combined with leaving school early
- e. The desire is to make goal of compliance as positive rather than just punishment
- f. Parents are encouraged to communicate with board members - individually and as group at board meeting (3rd Thursday each month)
- 6. Treasurer - New Treasurer, Janet Hanley, introduced
- a. The treasurer's report was provided. Year End (6/30/07)
- b. There was a discussion of the deposit fronted for the post-prom event being planned.
- 7. Program report
- a. Johnie Early: Dean's Perspective on applying to College University of Toledo College of Pharmacy Time and place to follow
- 8. Liaisons- Parents needed to link departments and community to PTO
- 9. Newsletter:
- a. Fall membership and order form in newsletter - 1mailing vs. 2,
- b. Target Date mail 9/15/07
- c. PTO dues cover printing and mailing costs for the year (traditionally paid 800 +/- members)
- 10. Fundraising:
- a. eScrip new base line fund raiser, register Fresh Values card. Dominick's pays school monthly on earned percentage of $ spent. Will register people on BACK 2 SCHOOL night
- b. We need more families to pay PTO dues
- c. Benefit event- alternative date is Performing Arts Showcase in December. Auction chair unable to do it in December so continue with spring musical unless we find someone willing to chair this in December.
- d. Need General Chair
