The Benefits of Getting Involved
Here's what our members have to say.
Learn about OPRF and how the school works: "Joining the PTO was one of the best things I did as a high school parent. I gained an understanding of the school and how it works, got to know administrators and faculty members, and developed friendships with other parents that will last well after graduation day. In addition, I believe we did worthwhile work that benefited the whole school community."Donna D’Oro Anderson
An opportunity to support student projects: “I joined the PTO because I had been involved in the organization at the grade school and junior high levels – so it was a natural continuation of volunteering. Benefits of being involved include knowing more about what is going on at the school, working on projects that support students – such as helping to showcase their artwork in the PTO school calendar – and meeting new people.”

Feel connected with the high school: “As a parent of boys, and knowing the resulting lack of school-related communication that goes along with that, I got involved in the PTO to try and fill that gap and understand the culture my son lives in every day. My experience was great in that respect, especially since our communication about school never got better. I now have a freshman coming onboard and am well prepared.
I also developed a deep respect for the faculty and parents who work to make this school great and felt I was able to contribute to that effort in working as a PTO liaison (a program that links parents with school divisions/activities). This became my real satisfaction.”

Learn about important issues, resources: “The PTO gave me an instant network of other parents, to make OPRF a ‘smaller’ place, and to provide an opportunity to hear about various issues, learn about resources at the school and make my student's life (and mine!) easier overall.”
Joan Winstein
Interact with parents, faculty and students: “I had the opportunity to work on several exciting new PTO initiatives, and get to know so many great parents, faculty, staff and students. One of the best experiences I had was working side-by-side with students (including my daughter!) on a new OPRF weekend activity program. The kids were amazing. Being involved in the PTO liaison program helped me to feel a part of the school and connect with my own kids. There are so many ways to get involved. My PTO volunteer experience has been very rewarding – I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
Vicky Lekovish
Understand the dynamics, culture of OPRF: “I am active in the high school PTO because I am curious. At a PTO meeting I learn that the cell phone policy is under review. By serving on a committee, I meet and collaborate with school staff and administrators. Every time I make a connection to OPRF, I discover something that explains the dynamics and culture of the school environment that plays a key role in my kid's – and every kid’s – daily life. I gain ideas for improving family and student experiences with the school.

OPRF is a big place, and there’s no better way to learn what is going on than through your PTO. The PTO serves as a link between home and school.
